With over 22 years experience in the field of information security, computer forensics, Eric Shaw is a Clinical Psychologist and former intelligence officer who has spent the last 20 years applying behavioral science methods to forensic and security challenges. As the Company's profiling consultant, Dr. Shaw has supported Stroz Friedberg investigations and services for a broad array of clients. He has helped the firm discover the identity of insiders and outsiders making anonymous threats and manage these subjects. He has also helped the company conduct vulnerability analyses related to threats from insiders and terrorists. Through Shaw Stroz, LLC--an affiliated firm--Dr. Shaw continues to collaborate with company staff on new computerized profiling applications designed to identify and assess individuals at-risk for anti-social acts.
Dr. Shaw has approached profiling from the perspective of a clinician aiding law enforcement and corporate security, an intelligence officer supporting national security interests, an organizational consultant supporting manager development and organizational change, and a legal consultant providing negotiation and litigation assistance. In addition, Dr. Shaw provides traditional psychological screening, monitoring and debriefing services to government and corporate clients.
Dr. Shaw's recent investigative work has included such tasks as determining the number and characteristics of persons making anonymous threats, helping investigators narrow a field of suspects, and providing guidance on investigative, management and legal strategies. He has published widely in scientific and professional journals on insider risk, psychology and management. His current research on insider activities includes case investigation and analysis for the Department of Defense and Dr. Shaw is a Visiting Scientist at Carnegie Mellon's CERT/Software Engineering Institute where he provides psychological input on insider risk and mitigation strategies.
As an academic researcher Dr. Shaw has developed new approaches to the remote assessment of individuals and groups. He has particularly specialized in the use of content analysis techniques to produce profiles. These methods draw heavily on individual and group communications, including speeches, interviews, email and other online communications. He has recently received patents covering an automated system for assessment of individuals and their relationships from online communications.
In addition to his consulting practice, Dr. Shaw is a Professorial Lecturer in Political Psychology at the Elliot School of International Studies of George Washington University. Dr. Shaw also maintains a private clinical practice in Washington, D.C. He is certified in critical incident stress debriefing and served with the FBI's Evidence Recovery Teams at the Pentagon after the September 11th attacks. He received his B.A. from Colgate University and his Masters and Ph.D. in Psychology from Duke University. He performed a fellowship in Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic of New York Hospital--Cornell University Medical Center and subsequently served on the faculty. He is a founding member, Board member and instructor at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Washington, D.C.- a training center for psychotherapists.
