With more than 14 years of in the trench experience in Incident Response, Network Security and Computer Forensics, James Butterworth is Director of Incident Response and Federal Services for Guidance Software, Inc. In this position, he is responsible for responding, world-wide, to any high-priority computer security incident in sensitive and potentially hostile environments.
His background as a Certified EnCase ® Examiner, SANS Certified Intrusion Analyst, SANS Certified Reverse Engineer, and SANS Certified Systems and Network Auditor, as well as an Instructor of Computer Fraud and Digital Investigations with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, has contributed to countless successful investigations involving thousands of computer systems and enables him to consistently provide subject matter expertise in these fields. As an expert practitioner, James is uniquely positioned as a Leader in the Industry, drawing upon his diverse international experience having performed Incident Response investigations for Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies, Foreign Government, Department of Defense, Financial, Healthcare, Public and Higher Education, Entertainment, Motion Picture, Video Gaming, Oil, Manufacturing, among others.
James has investigated global hacking and data mining incidents involving the defense industry; corporate theft of proprietary source code; Zero-day outbreak containment; intellectual property theft; e-mail spoofing; phishing expeditions; eDiscovery; evidence seizure; data recovery; corporate policy enforcement; Web defacement; harmful digital communications; and packet capture/analysis of unknown activity. Butterworth honed his diverse technological skill set while completing more than 20 years of distinguished and highly decorated service in the United States Navy. Seven of those years were spent fulfilling two tours in the Fleet Information Warfare Center – the Navy Center of Excellence for Information Warfare.
